ABSTRACT: Emerging economies face international competition and moreover, similar technology applies to organizations in the relevant industry. Therefore companies must strive to keep their market positions or create new business opportunities. Novel and innovative strategies are required in either case, which depends on differentiation in the market. Recognized as a value for sustainable competitive advantage and commercial success, industrial design (ID) has an essential role. This paper proposes that strategic approach to product design and development process is beneficial for the effectiveness of ID practices. Context of the research in the study is divided into two sections. The first section derived from a study previously conducted in Poland and aimed to observe whether Turkish companies recognized ID as a strategic tool for differentiation. A comparison of the results was made with the results obtained in Poland. The second section of the research context focuses on Turkish companies. To explore how strategic approach to product design and development process impacts on ID practices; factors and hypotheses were generated through principal components analysis prior to regression analysis to analyze the relationship. 198 companies from textile, furniture, and home appliances industries took part in the research. Major indications of the research show that strategic effect of teamwork has a central role in effective ID practices.

ABSTRACT: Bilgi çağına geçiş sürecinde önemli ilerleme kaydetmiş ekonomilerde faaliyet gösteren kuruluşların büyük bölümü alışılmış rekabetçi kıyaslama ve kalite yönetiminin dışında stratejileri benimsemektedir.

ABSTRACT: This paper involves a study concerning the characteristic use of differentiation as a competitive strategy in Turkish Textile Industry. The study includes 142 manufacturing enterprises located in one of the major industrial zones in Istanbul. Following a literature review, variables were determined as cross-functionality, creativity, synergy, consistency, mission, allocation of resources, innovation climate, competitor products, influence of macro issues for those regarding the “organizational efforts focusing on innovation” construct, and “influence of the customer”. Results reveal two clusters of companies in our research context; one consisting of those applying several organizational issues in order to implement differentiation strategy in their market, and the other, which focus strictly on customer needs and requirements.

ABSTRACT: Developing teams is to restrict a big network into a certain micro environment, where members maintain strategic complementarity and reduce the level of information asymmetry among themselves. Therefore, they expect to yield a rational result as a consequence of their global behavior; the sum of the overall interaction weights within the team. This study considers the product development project teams as social networks with certain types of topology according to their configurations. The global behavior of these networks are analyzed through five types of interactions among its members; configurationally basic, department-based, accesibility-based, professional and social interactions, providing a framework to understand what cautions or efforts would be needed to use all potential channels of interaction more effectively.

ABSTRACT: Innovation, and therefore product development process became the essential competence of an organisation. Competition will be retained by the generation of new concepts with innovative ideas for developing products. In fact, competitors might replicate a firm’s performance for a lesser expense by exploiting knowledge that inadvertently spills outside the firms’ boundaries. Hereby, the importance of the knowledge flow in the product development process is obvious. This study focuses on the crucial element of the process; a coordinator who has to follow all the environmental factors, create and generate ideas, help the knowledge flow throughout the product development team and organisation’s members by using several managerial capabilities. We simply call such a person the “mediator”, and developed a model that would reflect his managerial capabilities in such a position. The model is also implemented in one electronic goods manufacturing company in Turkey in order to maintain general view of the model’s theoretical assumptions.

ABSTRACT: A supportive and strong link between the manager and the employee; empowerment, which brought a radical change in managerial issues is basically the outcome of the Third Managerial Revolution; the employee participation. Moreover, empowerment plays a vital role while competing in today's global business environment, in which flat organisations are focused on responding their customers' needs and requirements better and faster than their competitors. Delegation of authority for a long period of time in the past dominated the management field. In fact, this view changed into the "empowerment" concept and it covers the participation and delegation of authority along with the motivation of the employees. This study analyses the implementation of empowerment over three successive eras in Turkish economy through a research, which was conducted in the 50 largest enterprises of Turkey in terms of number of employees.

ABSTRACT: Today's global competitive environment require an element that holds much more value than technology, natural resources and even money; knowledge and every individual is a knowledge worker. Burk, whose background is in technology transfer (not human resources) says; knowledge management is 80% people and 20% technology. In our study, we have aimed to determine how efficient HRM practices can provide an effective knowledge management process in the organisations. In this study, we have aimed to examine the total efficiency of the HRM functions on the knowledge management efforts in the large sized Turkish firms that are members of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. We have also aimed to find out the one to one relationship between each function of the HRM and the knowledge management. Our findings support the result that the surveyed firms are generally concentrated on analysing the individual needs and career planning in their knowledge management efforts.

ABSTRACT: Comprising nine provinces, with a total budget of $32 billion; "The Southeastern Anatolia Project, GAP" is the most massive public project in the history of the Turkish Republic. Indeed, GAP is a multi-sectoral and integrated regional development project, based on the concept of sustainable development. Indeed, GAP does not only mean building dams for electricity and irrigation of fertile plains. The project has also a vital purpose to eliminate the disparities in the development of different regions of Turkey. Moreover, the project helps decrease the number of registered unemployed people in the Region which is above the national average. The project provides suitable conditions for attracting the skilled labour force and the people who have the willing to make investments in the Region, particularly those who have already immigrated. Through an analysis of the relationship between strategic management and the human resource planning efforts within the corporations, our research is based on a comparison between the top 100 firms located in the GAP region and its neighbour provinces and the 500 major industrial enterprises of Turkey, announced annually by the ICI, Istanbul Chamber of Industry. A detailed process has been generated, which enables to view the strategic management process that leads to the human resources planning with; macro environmental analysis prior to the analysis of the industry and the firm's resources, mission statement, followed by goal setting and business unit strategy formulation, which leads to the stage of monitoring the human resources of the organisation, where demand for, as well as supply of human resources are forecast. As an outcome of this process, certain variables and their dimensions are processed through some statistical techniques in order to view the relationship. Finally, the characteristics of the firms in the GAP region are determined within a frame of the strategic management process and human resources planning relations, and compared with those of the 500 major firms of Turkey.

ABSTRACT: Gathering the customer requirements and needs in the preliminary stages of the product development process, the proactive approach enables the organizations with advantages of cost and time, which are the two key factors of competitiveness in the global market. Along with the proactive approach, it is obvious that customers and employees are satisfied at the highest level, product development process becomes more rapid than before, costs are reduced, and problems, which arise within the process before the production stage as well as during the product development process, are eliminated. In this study, the above mentioned facts are regarded as the variables that comprise the organization’s proactive point of view. This study aims to determine whether the firms use the proactive approach and the correlation among the variables. A survey was conducted to product managers in the small and medium sized firms having more than 250 employees listed by “Ekonomist (December 1998)”, a Turkish magazine of economy. Data received from the survey are processed through the SPSS for MS Windows 8.0, and correlation and regression analyses are conducted in order to verify the correlation among the variables prior to definitive and explanatory statistical analysis.

ABSTRACT: Following the international trends and today’s highly competitive environment, it is important that every organization throughout the world should strive for better performance. In order to provide a consistent mission and vision along with the strategic plan, the objectives and actions regarding each unit and individual within the organization must be well-defined and aligned with business priorities. Differing from other systems of planning; Hoshin Kanri Planning comprises every part of an organization. Evolved in Japan as a system of planning and deployment, Hoshin Kanri Planning is widely used around the world by many leading companies. Its purpose is to be aware of the status quo and make a major performance improvement by analyzing current problems and deploying in response to environmental conditions. With Hoshin Kanri Planning, top management vision can be translated into a set of coherent, consistent, understandable and attainable policies and actions, and can be easily applied at all levels and in all functions of the organization. Among the initial considerations in the Hoshin Kanri Planning approach to business system change are; (1) measuring the business system as a whole, (2) setting core objectives of the business, and (3) understanding the environmental situation in which the business operates. The intention is that, in companies using Hoshin Kanri Planning, everybody is aware of management’s vision and individuals become capable to run their projects to successful conclusions through coordinated business processes. In this study, the aim is to provide a broad view of Hoshin Kanri Planning System applications in the Turkish companies that have already implemented ISO 9001-9002 certification. The research comprises companies that have received the above-mentioned certificates from TSE, the Turkish Standards Institution, by the years 1998 and 1999.

The entrepreneur, who manages the organization which he established on his own, will naturally need to act like a professional manager as his organization reaches to the growth stage. In this study, the entrepreneurial process, the development stages of an entrepreneurial organization and managerial factors are defined through the entrepreneurial management process in order to clarify the differences between the entrepreneur and the manager profiles. In the second chapter, following the explanation of four different trends that the entrepreneur faces during the management process, the comparison of these two profiles are presented in details. Finally, the transition model from an entrepreneur to a professional manager is taken into consideration within the organization.

ABSTRACT: Among the management tools that have been developed to deliver the product to the customer in line with his requirements, Quality Function Deployment (QFD) demonstrates its proactive characteristic by considering the customer requirements and needs, or briefly voice of the customer, as the initiator input of the product development process. Furthermore, the implementation of projects as costly and time consuming as QFD depends on several organisational issues, which have great impact on the basic prerequisites that are necessary to initiate and conduct the project. The article examines the basic prerequisites with the impacts of the organisational issues on each of them.
